What is Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition? (PLAR)

If you have previous education in Health Sciences you may be eligible to earn academic credit for learning that you have already completed. You will need to demonstrate that you have acquired the necessary knowledge at a previous institution.

Who Can Apply?

PLAR candidates must have completed an OSSD and post secondary education similar to education provided by CCMH.

How Does it Work?

PLAR is done on a course by course basis. If a course covers material that you have already completed, you can ask for an assessment of your knowledge.  If you have completed the course, or courses,  within the previous 5 years and your grade be a minimum of 70% or if multiple courses are considered for one CCMH credit, an average of 70%.  If it is greater than 5 years since you completed the course you will be required to write a challenge exam.  If you obtain over 70% on the challenge exam you will be exempt from the course.

How to Apply

In order to apply for a PLAR complete the application for Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition and include your transcripts and course outlines for the specific course(s) being assessed.  The current PLAR application fee is $100.
