Massage Therapy in Halifax: Annis’ Story

Massage Therapy in Halifax: Annis’ Story

Annis 1

CCMH Instructor Annis Downey was working in merchandising at Best Buy when she hurt her back. She went to a chiropractor, who recommended she go for Massage Therapy.  When she decided to give it a try, she learned, “it was better than drugs.”

It didn’t take long before Annis realized that she didn’t want to work in retail anymore, and decided that she was going to study Massage Therapy. Living in Ontario at the time, Annis returned home to Halifax to start the two-year program at CCMH.

“It was not an easy program. The science content, especially physiology and neurology, was hard,” she said.

“The program comes at you and doesn’t stop, but it is worth the struggle. You meet great people and make great friends. The faculty and my friends supported me through the program.”

In the two years following her graduation, Annis worked at a chiropractor’s office. Then, she returned to CCMH as a Clinic Supervisor. Six years later, she now has a practice at home where she works full-time, and works part-time at CCMH.

“Being self-employed is a challenge,” said Annis.

“But it is also empowering. This is my second career, so I really empathize with students who are going through the same thing I did. If this is what you want, it’s worth it.”

It is clear that Annis truly loves what she is doing.

In addition to her many other responsibilities, Annis also developed a Chinese Cupping Massage Course, which she offers through CCMH Halifax as a Continuing Education Unit (CEU) course.

“Students get all excited about it – I really go back to basics with the course,” said Annis.

“I have gotten great feedback from the students and they tell me they learn so much from me in one hour.”

This is the ultimate compliment for Annis who has already taught this user-friendly CEU course six times this year.

When we asked Annis what she loves the most about her career, she couldn’t pick just one thing. She told us: “I find that teaching keeps me current and motivated. I’m always learning.”

More than liking one thing in particular, Annis describes how little she looked forward to her job in her previous career.

“Waking up every day to go to work was not something I looked forward to. Now, I wake up looking forward to my day. It is so nice to have something you are passionate about.”
