We’re our own breed. As massage therapists we’ve chosen a career that most of us feel passionate about and inspired by. But it’s important for students to remember that the choice to pursue massage therapy is a choice to have a fairly unique career. Here are some important reminders and […]
"On Wednesday afternoons for eight weeks this fall, we had the opportunity to offer massage to the youth at Covenant House, and the experience was nothing but positive. Each night, numerous young people aged 16-24 would come into the gymnasium at the shelter for a chair massage.
Covenant House addresses homeless youth, and guides young people who often do not have all the means necessary to finish their schooling or get to where they want to go in their lives. The youth we met were eager to experience, more often than not, their first massage. Most of the youth would engage with us in conversation, sharing their sometimes disheartening stories, while others would sit in quiet appreciation. Either way, at the end of each treatment, the youth were extremely grateful and the majority of them would revisit us each week.
The experience brought to light how massage can make an impact on people dealing with stress at a young age, as we noticed positive changes in the youth each time we saw them. It was a great experience being able to talk to and work with the youth, and proved to us how beneficial even 15 minutes of massage therapy a week can be for young people."
