At CCMH we we are constantly inspired by our incredible alumni. Their stories are a great motivation for our current students as well. This week we caught up with Talia Azzano. Talia graduated from CCMH Toronto (Davisville & Mt. Pleasant Campus). Talia is a passionate RMT who is currently working for herself as a freelancer. She loves what she does because she gets to connect with people and improve their health every day. Talia thoroughly enjoyed her time at CCMH. We spoke with her about her journey to become a RMT, what she loves about it, why she chose CCMH, and even got her best advice for students.
So Talia, why did you choose CCMH?
I chose CCMH because I felt immediately welcome. Even just enquiring about the program was such a pleasant experience. Information was available and any questions I had were answered, as well as specific requests. I was offered a personal tour, opportunities to meet staff and students, and I was even invited to sit in and observe a class if desired. As I walked down the halls, I noticed that the professionalism was extremely apparent — even with the students (who were just as welcoming as the staff). Even- observing how instructors and staff interacted with the students was professional, yet their relationships also seemed familial. Overall, it was clear that CCMH was there to offer a chance for everyone to succeed, be a part of the healthcare community; and it made me feel that I could be as well.
How lovely! We’re so glad to hear that your first impression of CCMH was so positive. What originally led you to pursue a career in Massage Therapy?
I originally wanted to pursue a career in Massage Therapy because I wanted to help as many people as I could to enjoy their best quality of life. Healthcare is a stable and ever-growing field, and studying Massage Therapy would allow me to explore various areas of Massage Therapy – from prenatal care to Sports Massage and even multidisciplinary care, and everything in between.
It is an incredibly diverse field, isn’t it. Now that you’ve graduated and started working, what’s your favourite part about being a RMT?
My favourite part about being a RMT is knowing that I can help others feel unconditionally cared for. I feel confident knowing that I have the tools to do that! To be able to address so many variables with the knowledge I attained at CCMH is an amazing feeling. No matter who I see, they get to leave our engagement feeling cared for and better than before.
That sounds incredibly fulfilling! Building strong relationships with clients is essential as a RMT. How do you typically connect with your clients?
I connect with my clients by engaging with them emotionally. I do this by being sincerely attentive and there for them. It instantly builds a professional and respectful patient/therapist relationship – skills that CCMH truly helped foster. I also connect with them simply by being a registered member of the CMTO. My membership ensures that my information and status is available to prospective clients. However, I have found over the years that word of mouth and having a registered business is the most effective way for patients to connect with me. Attending CCMH also helped me build and create my professional reputation.
As a shining example of a successful RMT, what advice can you offer current and new students?
My advice for new students is to fully immerse yourself in the program and to trust and embrace that this is the beginning of an extremely fulfilling career. Your time at CCMH will prepare you exceptionally well for your board exams and a rewarding career in Massage Therapy. If you fully participate in classes and projects, accept volunteer opportunities, and attend school events and celebrations, you will be taking major steps towards becoming an exceptional RMT and you will begin to feel like you are a part of the healthcare community. Take this advice and you will be well on your way to experiencing this rewarding career to the fullest!
Thanks so much for chatting with us, Talia. That’s great advice!
